YouTrip – Spend Smarter overseas

Launched on Aug 2018 is this app/card called YouTrip. It is a prepaid multi-currency mobile wallet that does not charge any transaction fees for over 150 countries which means you get a good exchange rate.

There are 2 parts to Youtrip, 1 is the youtrip card which acts like a debit card (It is not a credit card). So you will need to put top up amount first before using it. 2nd is the mobile app where you control the card like topping up, see your transactions, lock the card etc.

It is produced by Ezlink, Mastercard and You Technologies , they called it a smarter and cheaper way to pay overseas. Works anywhere that accepts mastercard which has around a few millions merchants around the world.

Advantages of using Youtrip

Because normal credit/debit card charges the following:

  •  Cross-Border Transaction Fees
  •  Foreign Exchange Fees
  • MasterCard usually charges a 1% fee for Singapore cards
  • Banks usually charge an additional fee on top of this

See the infographic above as an example, for 500 euros it will cost SG$812 when you use YouTrip instead of SG$843 when you use other credit/debit card.

Online money changer

youtrip currency exchange

Another feature of this app is that it is also an online 24/7 money changer for the following 10 currencies which means you can exchange and keep the money in your app first.

youtrip review

SG Dollars, US Dollars, Euros, British Pounds, Japan Yen, HK Dollars, Aus Dollars, NZ Dollars, Swiss Frank, Swedish Crona. For the rest of the currencies which is not in this 10, example Malaysia. You cannot exchange beforehand but instead it will follow the rate when you purchase something.

To explain it in simpler terms, example you are going to USA and you get to know the current exchange rate is very good, from you app you can straight away exchange your money to US$. So you do not need to rush to the Money changer to change it. You exchange it and keep that money in the app.
